Shinnecock & Peconic Area Report 6/13/10

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean
Tough going on the ocean fluke bite, the bay bite has been consistent with action try your luck with ¾ oz for the best action. The best bet in the ocean is sea bass. Fish to 5lbs continues to be the norm. Weighed in some nice bass this week one 34lber caught by Chris Digaetano on Tuesday drifting bunker chunks (picture attached) and a 20lber caught on clams drifting the inlet as well. The action on clam bellies continues to be good at the Ponquogue bridge. Bluefish are chasing bait all over the bay, look for the birds.

Peconic Bay
Plenty of action with porgies out in Peconic around Robin’s Island to 2lbs, worm and clam baits with chum. Blues are plentiful, try dragging an umbrella rig for a shot at loading a cooler. The Ferry slip has produced some nice bass this week.

Beaches/Shore Bound
The Ponquogue bridge is holding bass, blues and fluke. The Shinnecock canal has anglers catching fluke, bass, blues and porgies. Beach reports have been quiet in our area. The inlet has been producing quite a few decent bass, most on bait. All the larger fish have been caught on live bait on the night tides. Blues are in the inlet on bait with the birds showing each morning and evening.

Offshore
The waters have warmed considerably and the makos have moved in. We did hear of a few makos caught. Plenty of blue sharks around. The next week will be a good indicator of the action with many tournaments scheduled to take place all over the island. There are reports of some bluefin in about 200ft of water.

Shinnecock, Peconic and Offshore Report 6/6/10

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet
OceanFluke bite in the ocean getting better but still not where it should be, try some large smelts or Peruvians for the best shot at a keeper. The bay bite on the other hand continues to get better each day. The usual spots with Bucktails has been the best producers. Sea bass are coming off the Shinnecock reef and other pieces in the area with fish of 2-3lbs the norm and some fish to 5lbs mixed in. The Striped bass have really been hot in the Shinnecock Inlet and around the Ponquogue Bridge. Those who choose to chum with clam bellies have been rewarded with fish up to 33”. Bluefish are all over the bay, the evenings at the inlet have seen especially.

Peconic Bay
Fluke and Porgies at Rogers Rock and around Robins Island. Plenty of clam chum for the porgies has been the key. The fluke bite at Greenlawns has been good, try the deeper water for your best shot at a keeper.

Beaches/Shore Bound
Both the Ponquogue bridge and Shinnecock canal have produced bass, blues and fluke. Clams or bunker chunks for the bass and blues, squid and spearing for the fluke. The outgoing water has been the better producer this week. Throw some Bucktails with pork rind at the canal for the bass.

Offshore
Blue sharks are here for those interested in bending the rod. Try heading out to a few of the usual wrecks and you should have no problem finding some action. Water is still a bit cold for the Mako and threshers.
