Shinnecock Area Report 5/9/10

Blues and bass have been the main targets of the week with good results. Those fishing the ocean beaches and Ponquogue bridge have been rewarded with bass to 30" and blues to 8lbs. The Quogue canal and Peconic River produced plenty of action with the blues and the occational bass. The canal has produced it's share of blues as well, give the north end at the jetty a shot as well as around the locks area. Three year old Ryan Connelly caught and released a 22" fluke from the canal on Thursday while weakfishing with his dad. Weakfish reports have come back from the Peconics but they are refusing to cooperate, fish are being spotted but not willing to take the baits offered. We are receiving some very encouraging reports of fluke in front of the inlet and are anticipating a great fluke openner on the 15th. Next weekend we will be stocked with all the usual baits including Live killies and eels.

Surf Report
The Beaches from Moriches to Montauk have been producing bass to 34" and blues to 10lbs. Those throwing topwater swimmers have been rewarded with the bass. The AVA Jigs have done well with the blues. Clam and bunker chunk baits are producing as well. Flanders bay and the 105 bridge areas have seen plenty of bunker with both bass and blues chasing them. Cow Neck in the Peconics has shown some weakfish but no reported catches just yet.
