Shinnecock & Peconic Area Report 5/23/10

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean
The ocean fluke bite has been slow to get going. Fish up to 7lbs have been reported but it’s a slow pick at best. The bay bite is starting to turn on, give it a shot west of the Ponquogue Bridge. Bluefish remain the number one predator of the bay and inlet. They are feeding on the huge schools of spearing moving about the bay, just look for the birds working. Seabass have come over the rails out on the Shinnecock reef. Striped bass have been reported at the bridge and inlet, schoolies are most of the action right now. Give anchoring up west of the bridge or by the red can inside the inlet a shot on the out going tide for the bass. Those willing to drag the umbrella rigs out in 70-90 ft. of water have been rewarded with plenty of keeper bass, no birds showing but plenty of sandeels.

Peconic Bay
The fluke bite at Greenlawns has slowed quite a bit. The blues are still all over the bay. Frying pan size porgies have been reported around Rogers Rock. We are still getting reports of a few weakfish on the north fork but not much in our area. Striped bass have come out of the south race.

Beaches/Shore Bound
The ocean beaches along the south fork are producing schoolies bass to just keeper size and cocktail blues. The bass are out in the deeper water, it’s just a matter of time before the bait moves closer to the beaches. Top water plugs and tins are the best producers. The Shinnecock canal has seen quite a bit of action this week with cocktail blues, striped bass, fluke and porgies all be reported. Try for the fluke when the locks are closed and all others can be targeted when the locks are open or closed.
